Government of Pakistan is looking into ways to regulate social media usage in Pakistan. This was mentioned by Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information Pervez Rasheed in a TV Program “Jirga” on Geo News. When the TV host Saleem Safi mentioned receiving notices by PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) and questioned government’s take on social media usage, the federal minister hinted at regulating social media as well.
Because of increased political debate on social media in the past 3 years and aggressive growth in mobile Internet users, social media trolling has become a commonplace in Pakistan.
Information Technology experts and rights activists, however, believe that social media regulations must not be used to censor information or to bar people from expressing their opinion. There needs to be a balance while chalking out such regulations.
